On the power of noticing

No matter how hard things are, no matter miserable or ugly things may seem on any given day, you always have the opportunity to put yourself in the way of beauty.
There's always a sunrise and a sunset, and it's up to you to be there for it or not.

–Cheryl Strayed

it is a serious thing
just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.

–Mary Oliver

***Note from Ansley:***

somehow we're already two weeks out from Thanksgiving, at the starting line of the sprint through the holidays to the end of the year.

if you're anything like me, 2025 has been a whirlwind. wasn't New Years Day like a month ago? where has the time gone?

this year has been full to the brim, overflowing with stories of complexity & chaos on the national & global level, and no doubt the same is true for many of us at a personal level too.

and yet we find ourselves smack dab in the middle of the month of gratitude.

what is the way forward when gratitude feels like a platitude?

we know there is so much to be grateful for. we count our blessings, tell ourselves not to take our health or our families for granted. and yet oftentimes if we're completely honest with ourselves, especially when it feels like so much of the world is on fire and in pain, it can feel a little hollow, a bit forced.

these words from Cheryl Strayed & Mary Oliver have long been favorites of mine.

they live on a note in my phone, along with a few others that I collect & save for when I just need a drink of water for my soul.

put yourself in the way of beauty.

notice beauty, the stunning gloriousness of the sunrise & sunset that happens every single day, no matter what madness happens in between.

recognize that it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.

these reminders shift my perspective & produce gratitude that is real, raw, and authentic, no matter what circumstance I find myself in.

the sun always rises. the morning is always fresh, even if the world is still broken.

I can put myself in the way of beauty every single day, and Dostoevsky wasn't wrong when he said "Beauty will save the world."
